Brotherhood: Elder Low, Elder Werner and Mike...Learning and Progressing Together

This summer we had a large group of Pinacle Alarm sales people who added so much to the Astoria Ward. All have returned to their homes, except for Mike, from Russia, who has been learning about the church. We drove to Long Island City to give Mike a ride to and from church and invited him to join us for Sunday dinner. We had a chance to join with the Elders and teach Mike about the importance of prayer and daily scripture study. Elder Low's family joined in and we along with Mike all committed and recommitted to pray morning and night and read our scriptures each day. Even though Mike will return to Russia on September 10th, it has been a blessing to know him and have a chance to plant some seeds, reminding him that he already chose Jesus Christ once. We are praying he will choose Him again and share his happiness with his family in Russia. He is a great young man in every way.

Our son, Elder Thomas Patton, has been transferred to the Mission Office, as you know. I e-mail Tom late every Sunday night & look forward to his Monday a.m. e-mail like a Christmas present!! He tells us that he has been asked to officiate in the baptism of Gezette this week-end and is in charge of creating the program & in general is SO excited to know of her commitment & is very Honored to have been asked by her. What I'm wondering is whether you would possibly be able to take a few pictures of this great event for Tom & even highlight this in your fabulous web pages?? We would love to see him in your pages as this is a hallmark event for him & so meaningful! He tells us he is still in your Zone, but I don't know if you'd be free to do this...He hasn't asked, although we know he thinks So highly of you - it's me who is asking. Or perhaps someone else might have a digital to be able to take several pictures, as we've never seen him dressed in white to perform this sacred ordinance of baptism, yet. I have 4 teenage daughters who have good friends on Facebook who at times have shown some of their most memorable mission experiences & a few picture the missionary standing next to their grateful, newly-converted friend/friends anticipating entering the Waters of Baptism in the next few minutes! To close, our family is just wondering if this would be possible because it marks such a good accomplishment & honorable event for Thomas!! He has told us that he loves to proselyte - finding joy in conversing on the train, in the parks, the street sweeps and even holding his white poster with Elder Low on the 4th!! That was one of my favorite pictures of him. He adores Elder Low. Also wondering if there is any way to obtain copies of the px of Thomas which have been posted on your great web pages?? Especially the one with Elder Low holding the 'Meet the Mormons' poster!? Love, Margie Patton P.S. January 10, 2008 we arrived in Queens, New York. We are currently serving as full-time missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We were called to serve in the New York, New York South Mission. It is a special and unique assignment. Serving here is like teaching all nations, with missionaries who teach in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Russian and American Sign Language. Nearly 10 million people live within our mission, representing 112 nationalities. We are blessed to be serving along side the most incredible missionaries in the world! We love President and Sister Bennion who have been cherished friends since he was the president of Ricks College. We are happy to be serving the Lord and living on Steinway Street in Astoria.

History of the New York, New York South Mission

Long before our mission was organized, Elder Parley P. Pratt was the first missionary in this dispensation to preach the Gospel in New York City and Long Island.
This mission has significant historic roots. It is the heart of the former Eastern States Mission which was established in 1839.
That mission, headquartered in Brooklyn, enjoys the distinction of being the second oldest mission of the Church, behind the British Mission.
The Eastern States Mission consisted of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia in 1948. Since that time, many changes have been made in the boundries of the mission.
The name of the mission was changed from the Eastern States Mission to the New York New York Mission in 1974. At that time the mission included the following areas: New York State as far as Poughkeepsie, the entire state of Connecticut, a small part of Massachusetts, as well as part of New Jersey and the island of Bermuda. The mission boundaries were once again changed in 1976 excluding Massachusetts and all of the state of Connecticut, with the exception of Fairfield County.
In 1987, after another boundary change was made, the New York New York Mission consisted of the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island), Long Island, New York State north to Poughkeepsie, a portion of Connecticut and the island of Bermuda.
The mission was divided once again in 1993. The New York New York South Mission encompasses the New York City boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, as well as the New York counties of Nassau and Suffolk on Long Island. It also includes the small British Island of Bermuda in the Atlantic.
